We want to introduce you to LDN London’s Pathway to Work Programme. We are looking for people within our communities who are interested in a career in support work and the healthcare sector but don’t know where to start. We are here to guide those who have a passion for support work but need a helping hand to start their journey. We are here to get you there!

The aim of the programme is to find people within our communities who are interested in a career in support work and the healthcare sector but have not had the resources or experience. We are currently looking for people who live within the Westminster borough. However, we will be expanding to our other boroughs (Camden, Islington, Kensington) in the future.

Who are we?

We are LDN London (Learning Disability Network London), an award-winning charity with 60 years’ experience supporting people with learning disabilities in London to stay healthy, be safe and live well.

What will participants get out of the programme?

At the end of the programme participants should:

  • Be more confident about working with people with learning disabilities and autism
  • Gain basic training and certificates
  • Have the basic skills needed to be a support worker
  • Be able to start or apply for paid work as a support worker at LDN London

What does programme entail?

The programme will train participants as well as give them hands on experience (with an existing fully trained support worker present) within LDN London to gain experience supporting people with a learning disability with activities and daily service needs. Participants will also be supported to prepare for the chance to get a permanent role support worker within one of our services.

The programme is 4 weeks long (spread over 5 weeks) and involves face to face training, self-learning, and experiential learning at both our community hub and in one of our services.

Participants will need to be able to commit to 2/3 days per week (approximately 10 hours per week).

What does a support worker do?

The role supports people with learning disabilities to lead fulfilling lives. It is not the same as being a care worker. Support workers enable people to live their own unique life, so no two days or two people supported will be the same. Support workers need to understand each person’s support needs and interests and be ready for the unexpected, for example helping people to:

  • Undertake day to day activities (morning routine, meals, health appointments, leisure activities etc)
  • Make choices about their day, life, and relationships
  • Visit friends or entertain people when they visit them
  • Undertake study, work, and leisure activities.

Benefits of the programme:

  • Direct experience in a service with support (excluding personal care/ manual handling, medication)
  • Opportunity to gain an insight in the role, gain new skills and confidence within the healthcare sector
  • Potential to get a permanent role with LDN London
  • Faster compliance process when candidate is successful with the programme
  • Services gain new staff who share our values and have potential to grow as a support worker everyday
  • Gaining new perspectives and ideas from others to further progress LDN London service standards and quality of life for the people we support.
